What is Labour Day? Why do we take a break? Who gets a day off?

Labour Day is an important day to honour and recognize the role of workers around the world. It falls on May 1st every year, originating from the labour rights movement in the United States in 1886.
Thailand officially began observing Labour Day in 1956, to express gratitude and support for the rights of workers in all sectors.

Why do we take a break on Labour Day?

  • To allow workers to rest after a year of hard work

  • To promote labour rights and proper welfare

  • To raise awareness of the value of labour in society

Who gets a day off on Labour Day?

✅ Private sector employees
✅ State enterprise employees
✅ General workforce employees

❌ Government officers and civil servants do not get a day off, as Labour Day is not a government public holiday.
